Best Places to Visit in Sri Lanka for Every Type of Traveller

There is no one best place to visit in Sri Lanka. Depending on what type of traveller you are, the places you want to visit will differ. 

• For first-timers who are exploring the country, a classic 10-14 day loop will cover the majority of the tourist attractions. This covers Colombo, the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, Ella, and the South Coast.

When to Travel: Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka by Region

Unlike most countries with a limited geographical area, Sri Lanka has no single best month. 

We have two monsoon seasons called ‘Yala’ and ‘Maha’. 

If you’re visiting the west and south coast (i.e. Colombo, Galle & Mirissa) the best window is to travel between December to March. Avoid traveling from May to September when the southwest monsoon hits. 

If you’re traveling the east coast, it is ideal to go from May to September. This is the time when the west gets its rain. 

If you have your heart set out on the hill country and the cultural triangle, you can travel year-round with some flexibility. February – April and July – September are generally the driest months.
